FTC Grants ‘Red Flags’ Reprieve for State Chartered CU’s
The FTC has granted a six-month delay on enforcement of the ‘Red Flags’ rules requiring credit unions to have identity theft prevention programs in place. The FTC has postponed enforcement until May 1, 2009 giving financial institutions additional time to develop and implement written identity theft prevention programs.
However, the FTC announcement does not affect other federal agencies’ enforcement of the original November 1, 2008 deadline. The reprieve currently applies to State-Chartered credit unions falling under FTC rules. The FTC announcement can be reviewed at www.ftc.gov/opa/2008/10/redflags.shtm
